Progress on the center is moving forward, as we wrap up what seems like miles of wiring! On a recent walk through we reviewed the complexities of the systems that will run the building, exhibits and performances. For months, electricians and consultants have inspected every inch of the 11,000 square foot building to make sure the wiring and systems will serve the center’s needs for many years to come.
This summer, the exterior plaster will be completed along with insulation, drywall, entry glass and doors. Work will also begin on the Plaza to the south of the center in preparations for the October Art In Kayenta Festival.
Significant progress has been made on the Center for the Arts in Kayenta! Our crew has been working hard to bring this space to completion and the results of their efforts are quite visible. The CFA is now fully framed, revealing the fantastic architecture of this state-of-the-art structure. We can't wait for the completion of this undertaking and for all the ways that it will support the mission of KAF.
We are excited to see some significant process on the Center for the Arts at Kayenta! The construction team has been working hard under the summer sun to make the Center a reality.
The foundation has now been completely poured and the building is beginning to come to life! This week, support beams were put up throughout the building and the walls are currently being framed.

THE WALLS ARE GOING UP!
Yes, the walls of the new Center for the Arts at Kayenta are going up!
There has been considerable progress on construction of the Arts Center since the last issue of The Newsflash. The final plans were approved by Ivins City in March.
Footings have been poured, block walls have been laid (behind where the dressing rooms and rehearsal room will be located), sewer line trenches have been dug and forms for the concrete slab have started to be set in place. The steel trusses for the theatre roof have also been ordered and are expected to arrive in a few weeks. Shortly, the concrete slab will be poured and the framing will begin. It’s been a long road, but it’s finally happening!
The photo to the right shows the forms around the area that will eventually be the men's and ladies' lounges. The gray block wall is at the rear of the building and will be part of the dressing rooms, backstage area and, just around the corner, the rehearsal space for the Arts Center!
Work has also begun under the building to install trenches for audio / video and plumbing.

Construction on the new Center for the Arts has begun!
Over the past year Kayenta Arts Foundation diligently has been working to complete the planning stages for the Arts Center. Negotiations have taken longer than anticipated, but we have turned the corner. The final paperwork was signed on February 21, 2014. We have now progressed to the construction phases.
KAF encountered a number of unanticipated steps prior to initiation of construction. A few of those steps included:
1) “over-excavating” the site (removing, mixing, replacing and compacting the soil down eleven feet below the foundation) in order to remove irregular soils and to assure ground stability for the Center
2) creating an access road
3) acquiring land owned by the State of Utah in order to add 26 parking spaces
4) updating and altering architectural plans for the Arts Center to accommodate land modifications and city ordinances
5) consolidating the lots on which the Center will be located.
Kayenta’s developer, Terry Marten, has been instrumental in aiding KAF throughout this entire process, and KAF is grateful for his time and investment in the Center.
Construction of the retaining walls has been completed.
Final plans for the Center still need to be submitted to Ivins City for approval. This process should take approximately six weeks. Once approval is granted, the slab foundation will be poured and Phase 1 (see below) will be complete.
To expedite construction of the Center in a timely manner, Kayenta Arts Foundation has established a five-phase approach to the project. The five phases are as follows:
Pre-Construction Phase – this phase includes all steps to prepare the building site for construction. This phase is complete.
Phase 1: Construction Initiation – this phase includes all work on the site up to and including the pouring of the foundation. This phase is currently in progress and is scheduled for completion late August 2014.
Phase 2: Close-in the Building – this phase requires $550,000 to complete, of which KAF has raised $250,000 to date. The additional $300,000 must be raised prior to this phase’s start date in September. Exposure to the elements may irreversibly damage construction materials if there are any work stoppages during this phase. Therefore, it is imperative that full funding for this phase be available before its commencement. Completion of this phase is scheduled for December 2014.
Phase 3: Certificate of Occupancy – KAF must raise $380,00 to complete this phase, which will result in the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy by Ivins City. This phase is scheduled for completion three months after completion of Phase 2.
Phase 4: Grand Opening – this phase requires KAF to raise an additional $350,000 to prepare the interior of the Arts Center for its Grand Opening. Estimated Phase 4 end date is May 2015.
We will keep you updated as we proceed with all construction phases of the Center. The anticipated completion date for the Center is mid-2015.
Kayenta Arts Foundation is supported in part by funding from Washington County RAP funds, Ivins City, and Santa Clara RAP funds.
